Hi Reader,
Today was one of those perfect Toronto days. Blue skies. Sunshine. The kind of weather that makes you question every life decision keeping you indoors.
And yet, at 11 a.m., I logged onto Zoom for a coworking session.
Hosting coworking sessions in June feels a little funny when everyone would rather be outside enjoying the sunshine.
After all, this is the peak patios-and-park-hangs season we've all been waiting for.
But when I opened the Zoom room, 14 people showed up, laptops open, ready to work.
When I first started working for myself, I loved the obvious freedoms: no boss, no commute, no fixed hours.
But I eventually noticed that when I had no structure at all, my days felt more scattered than free.
I’d spend half the morning deciding what to work on, getting distracted by life admin, then trying to make up for lost time later.
By the time I finally hit my stride, a few hours of work had turned into a full-day production.
These days, I think about flexibility differently.
If I want to take Friday afternoon off, enjoy a patio lunch, go for a long walk, or spend more time outside while the weather is cooperating, I still need a way to get my work done.
That's where structure comes in.
Not the rigid, corporate kind.
Just enough of it to help me focus when it's time to focus.
Today's coworking session is a good example. We checked in, shared our goals, did two focused work sprints, and wrapped up a little early.
A few hours later, I finished my priority work, my inbox was under control, and I was heading out for a walk in the sunshine.
That's the version of freelancing I want.
I don’t need to optimize every single hour of my day or feel guilty every time I step away from my desk.
I just want to get the important stuff done, then get on with the rest of my life.
Try this: What's one small container you could create for yourself this week?
Maybe it's a two-hour focus block each morning. Maybe it's a library work session. Maybe it's putting your phone in another room for an hour.
A few hours of structure can create a lot more room for everything else.
’Til next time!
Big (virtual) hugs,
✨ What’s happening inside The Reach
We kicked off Open House today, and one of my favourite parts of coworking is hearing what everyone is working on during check-ins.
Today, that included:
- Reviewing the final files for a self-published book
- Drafting LinkedIn posts and a newsletter
- Preparing for a work leave
- Conducting a website audit
- Client outreach
- Cash flow projections
The people in the room were just as varied: marketing consultants, a career coach, a brand designer, a language resource developer, a Salesforce specialist, a web designer, a fractional CEO, and more.
A pretty good snapshot of what coworking inside The Reach often looks like: different people, different priorities, all making progress in the same room.
💡What's on my radar
This week, I’m turning this section over to you. What are YOU loving right now?
A book, a podcast, a show, a patio, a product, a tiny ritual, a weirdly specific snack. Anything!
Hit reply and tell me. I’m building my summer “things worth checking out” list.
👩🏾💻 I have space for one new project in June
I'm looking to connect with creative founders, consultants, and B2B/software brands who need help translating their expertise into clear website copy, content strategy, or thought leadership content.
If someone comes to mind (including you), I'd love an introduction.!
